Tree idiots

  • September 2nd, 2009

I’ve renewed my membership of Forest and Bird every year since 1974.  In 1996 I shut up more than half of my farmland for regeneration of native bush. I love trees.

But I despair when I hear the green idiots claim we’ll get more trees by telling people that if they let a tree grow on their land that part  will become public reserve. For that is what the currrent law does, in effect. The proposed reform does not go far enough.

Most tree control provisions in local planning schemes effectively nationalise the tree and the land on which it grows a few years after planting, when it reaches a size that other people might enjoy.  Without compensation you lose control of the tree and the land on which it grows, for the benefit of people who like to look at it.

The result? Wise folklore that says "dont plant trees". Certainly dont let anything grow to the expropriation point.

I would love to have planted native trees on our coastal land. In fact we did plant hundreds of native shrubs. They were largely killed by frost. When it came time to replace that failure we succeeded with mostly exotic species, especially flowering gums because they feed birds.

We’re lucky the natives did not grow. Because local planning rules "protect" native vegetation. We can’t afford the risk that if we grow natives we might not be allowed to clear building sites. Even if allowed we could have to pay $000s in RMA proceedings fighting neighbours or dopey Council "environmental advisers" for permission to deal with our own trees.

Only the environment loses when idiots who delight in bossing others around can disguise their nastiness as concern for trees.

I can’t find it, but on NZ conservative there was a comment once where someone said “oh, once you’ve grown a tree beyond a certain point you’ve gifted it to the public and renounced your rights over it”.

He just didn’t seem to understand the points you’ve made here.

So, if I grow a plantation of rimu or totara trees for 40 years on my own land, I might not be allowed to harvest them for the timber? What sort of property rights are those?

Oh Sephen, I despair of you! (not least for your inability to select native plants suitable to local growing conditions – what crazy place do you live in where you have frost right down to the coast anyway?) However it is heartening to know that you are a Forest & Bird member and we shall continue to pray for your soul.

About 18 years back [before this sort of nonsense reached critical mass] a neighbour invited a DoC rep and F&B to go over his farm to see what they were interested in preserving. Delighted, they swarmed over the place and produced reports maps and photos which they sent him.
He used the report as a ‘fire task’, got in his ‘dozer and took it all out. We were fairly appalled.
Now I just see him as prescient. We are now in the position of having to apply to a duplicitous council for a resource consent to ‘spray, cut, remove, crush, or burn indigenous vegetation’. To wit, bracken–accorded the same status as a kauri forest.

Councils are packed with dickheads, their sympathies aligned with the Green tragics. Their revolving office chairs are kept warm by their fat non-productive arses producing reports of no moment, great interference and large invoice value [plus gst]

Half of this country is making a living by placing obstacles in the path of the other half.

I suspect that your corresponent Helen has bought into the Green ” mother earth” legend ; those well meaning individuals who are usually starved of any exposure to spirituality at a young age. Hence she ” pray(s)” for your soul. It’s enough to make one weep. The fact is that well meaning small c conservationists ( not disimilar to small l liberals ) think it’s enitrely appropriate to appropriate private property rights for the greater good (mother earth or similar) as they see it.Rather reminicent of a prominent Auckland politician and one time communist who now styles himself as a ” conservationist”.

also my wide battery driven drill,
gosh look at this hole in the tree with Monsanto Roundup in it,
your tree blackening my light is dead,
nobody crowd out my sunlight neighbour with your precious tree,
